Farewells

Jane Flanagan

As we bid farewell to summer, I'm excited about the approach of my favourite fashion season. It's warm enough in fall that you can make fashion choices indifferent  to the pragmatic demands of winter. And it's cool enough to introduce layers, textures, and darker colours. These pieces are forming the basis for my Fall inspiration...

New Dress a Day

Jane Flanagan

Marisa of New Dress a Day is spending the entire year without doing an ounce of traditional clothing shopping. She's at her happiest when scouring flea markets, vintage stores, and garage sales for the perfect pieces and updating and translating them to fit her style.

After losing her job, Marisa decided to forgo the high street and department stores and purchase only pieces that have been used and  . . . Continue Reading

Style Inspiration: Jane Dress

Jane Flanagan

Call this Style Inspiration a complete ego trip, but when I saw J.Crew's new Jane dress, I knew I wanted it. It's basically meant to be. So, I put together a little Style Inspiration to justify my stance.

On the upside, this works even if your initial is not "J". I love this layerable look for this transitional season. Later, a big chunky cardigan would add another dimension.

Etsy Favourite: Shihar

Jane Flanagan

Israel-based designer Shira of the Etsy store Shihar creates clothing that merges eastern lines with modern cuts; a hybrid of her English and Mediterranean culture. She started by sketching monks and nuns, and playing with fabrics, draping and folding, until her own designs emerged. Those designs are wonderfully comfortable, flattering and wearable. Visit her Etsy store here and her website here.

Modern Brooch Round-up

Jane Flanagan

In Fall, I usually start digging through my small collection of brooches. I love to wear them against tweed and wool, holding cardigans and scarves in place. While it's easy to find a wide assortment of vintage and vintage-style bejeweled brooches, it can be difficult to find something with a more modern edge to it. These ten offer precisely that. And, I have to say, I'm truly smitten...

Style Inspiration: Denim Military Jacket

Jane Flanagan

Last week, I received an e-mail from reader Elizabeth. She wrote: "I bought a jacket. A bit of a branch out in style for me, being a denim military jacket, but one of those things I liked more as I looked at it, despite myself. I've included a photo of it below, and it's what I would love you to build a board around. I can't blow my budget on an outfit—I have a never-worn pair of very  . . . Continue Reading

Quince & Co

Jane Flanagan

My good friend and knitter extraordinaire Laura sent me a link to Quince & Co a few weeks ago. And last week Chelsea blogged about them too. So, yes, I'm the last one to this party. But, in case any of you missed out, I wanted to share them here too! Quince & Co is a collaboration between  two knitwear designers and an owner of a spinning mill, with a strong bias toward natural fibers and patterns that are utilitarian and friendly.

Military Jacket Round-up

Jane Flanagan

Military-style jackets are a wardrobe staple, especially perfect for transitional seasons. I featured one in this past Style Inspiration and still love this combination of feminine with utilitarian. As the Fall collections roll out, there are many to choose from. Or, you can hop on Etsy and search for something vintage and authentic! Here's a round-up to get your search started.
