Things We Like: PMO Design’s Sweater Mugs

Katherine Sharpe

ribbed mug cozies

While browsing the aisles of the New York Gift Fair a few weeks back, Andrew, Amy and I stumbled upon the small stall belonging to PMO Design, the small Montreal-based company of Kwok Wai Lau. Lau makes ceramic and wooden goods that manage to look elegant and whimsical at the same time. We were especially taken with his asymmetrical mugs—topsy-turvy when set on a table, they're  . . . Ready, Steady, Hello

Melissa Goldstein

a picture of your humble blogger

Fair citizens of ReadyMade Land: My name is Melissa Goldstein and I’m very pleased to meet you. Before we embark on this blogging adventure, there are some things you should know about me. I am consumed by all things arts and culture. And, supposing those things are impeccably dressed but have cabbages where their heads should be (Fig. 1), are scenes rendered dollhouse-like via the photo magic of  . . . Continue Reading

Design Shapes Things, Think About Things

Lily Kane

I've looked at these words daily—on a rad J. Abbott Miller for Pentagram-designed poster—since 1999 when the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum sent it out as promotion for their Charles & Ray Eames retrospective. It makes sense that these words are linked to the Eames, the husband and wife design demigods who were essentially their own Bartlett’s for inspiring quotations about the practice.  . . . Keith Mulvihill

Greetings, all! Keith Mulvihill here. I'm a freelance writer and editor living in Manhattan, and I am thrilled to be joining ReadyMade’s ever-growing stable of bloggers. Although there are many, many things I love about my hometown, I also love getting as far away from it as possible (as often as I can). It’s not always easy, what with work and pesky budgetary constraints that can wreak havoc on my  . . . Continue Reading

Culture Vulture

Carmela Ciuraru

carmela ciuraruGreetings, ReadyMade readers. I'm thrilled to be blogging about cultural matters. Not culture as in a colony of bacteria, but art, music, books, film---that sort of thing. I've written for the Los Angeles Times, ARTNews, Spin, Interview, Vogue, the San Francisco Chronicle, Elle Decor, and other publications. I've also edited a number of anthologies, which you can check out on Amazon.com. I live in Brooklyn,  . . . Continue Reading

Hello From Snowland!

Louisa Shafia

Wintertime treat: Snow and maple syrup

There’s a blizzard winding down outside as I sit in my Brooklyn home writing this on a late February day. While a good East Coast blizzard is hardly anything new---and certainly has its charms---some will argue that the increasing severity of intense weather patterns like this one are yet another sign that we've entered a new era of global environmental change. That's what I'm concerned  . . . Continue Reading

Three Dinner Party “Dos” from Sunday Suppers

Tim Mazurek

SS_cheesetable_001

Sunday Suppers is a series of cooking classes and dining events orchestrated by Karen Mordechai and Casey Solomon in Brooklyn, NY. They chronicle their work on the Sunday Suppers blog, which is an incredible source of inspiration for me. Each themed event includes a cooking class, a beautifully presented meal, and a take-home treat. The styling and attention to  . . . Continue Reading

Four Course Fridays: Is it Spring Yet?

Marc Matsumoto

With all the great design blogs, craft blogs, and tech blogs to keep up with, who has time to spend drooling over all the food blogs out there? That's where I come in. Each week I'll be choosing a theme and subjecting myself to hunger pangs as I scour the web in search of tasty recipes that anyone can make. It's snowing relentlessly here in the New York, but I remain hopeful  . . . Continue Reading

Friday (Visual) Escape: Domed Mud Dwellings in Cameroon

Alexa Fornoff

clayhouses Earth and water, with a little help from human hands, create some beautiful things. These homes, called cases obos, were the traditional mud dwellings of the Musgum peoples of Cameroon, and though rare, some groups still construct them. Wonder what the grooves are for? They help with rain drainage, allow people climb to the top for maintenance, and provide a canvas for customization. Check out more at Designboom here. (via Slipcast and Designboom)

You Should Make Homemade Almond Milk

Amy Palanjian

milk I've made cashew cheese before (man that sounds gross, but it's pretty tasty, I promise) but I've never tried making my own almond milk. I've recently replaced soy with almond in the milk department and I'm curious as to how different a homemade batch might taste. Has anyone tried and had success with this? Find the recipe over at So Good and Tasty
