Make a Ponytail Look Luxe With This Vintage Lace Headband How-To

Alexa Fornoff

vintage lace headband The wedding blog Ruffled has a DIY competition of sorts going on over at their site, and though it's almost at an end, there are some great projects that don't necessarily scream "wedding!" I'm a sucker for headbands, and this lace one would be great for spring. Check out Jessica's simple how-to here. (via Ruffled)

Wondering What to Make for Easter Breakfast? Two Words: Ricotta Pie

Amy Palanjian

ricotta pie

Throughout my entire life, I've always eaten ricotta pie for Easter breakfast. If you haven't had it, it's an Italian cheesecake made with ricotta cheese and flavored with citrus rind and cinnamon. It's deliciously simple and there's nothing like it for breakfast. (Though honestly I like it so much that I'll eat it whenever.) My mom sent me the  . . . Continue Reading

Crocheting Adventures with Hyperbolic Planes: Oddest Book Title of 2009

Polly Conway

crocheting_adventures

Each year, UK magazine The Bookseller gives the unique Diagram Prize to the book with the oddest title. This year's landslide winner was Dr. Daina Taimina's Crocheting Adventures with Hyperbolic Planes. You know you live in an alternate universe when this title sounds totally normal to you. But I digress. The magazine compiled a shortlist of crazy titles,  . . . Continue Reading

Recipe Roundup: Baking with Rhubarb

Tim Mazurek

It has been a long, cold winter in the Midwest. These first days of spring make me very anxious for the farmers markets to begin and for the return of local fruits and vegetables. Rhubarb is always one of the first things out of the gate and I greet it with excitement and appreciation. These tart stalks can be transformed into something delicious with the help of a little sugar  . . . Continue Reading

Etched to Order: D.I.Y. Dry Goods Organization

Claire Joyce

il_430xN.17607917 I've always been attracted to those old, vintage kitchen tins. I owned some lovely ones for a while that were shiny and silver with sleek black labels reading COFFEE, SUGAR, TEA, and FLOUR. They looked great, but they weren't large enough to contain the amount of tea and coffee that Garth and I keep in our house. We also use a variety of flours, sugars, and other dry goods  . . . How-To: Hanging Wall Organizer

Katherine Sharpe

hanging organizer

Spring cleaning, anyone? Jen over at In Color Order has a well-photographed, detailed tutorial up describing how to make this soft, hanging organizer. She made one to stash her mail; I think it could also come in handy to corral all the little things (q-tips/hair ties/makeup brushes/etc) that accumulate in the bathroom.

Knitta, Please: The Work of Magda Sayeg

Erin Loechner

design_for_mankind 2010-03-24 at 12.58.22 PM design_for_mankind 2010-03-24 at 12.58.33 PM I'm endlessly inspired by today's handmade movement, and nothing gets me riled up quite like the work of Magda Sayeg, founder of Knitta Please (because really, all talent aside, how great is that name?!). Quite possibly the most famous knit graffiti team, Knitta Please is dedicated to spreading charm all over the world---one thread at a time. design_for_mankind 2010-03-24 at 12.58.58 PM Jet-setting from Paris to Milan---and  . . . Tulum, Mexico: Let’s Hear It For Off Season!

Keith Mulvihill

tulum

Any week of the year, somewhere in the world, it’s off-season. Sure, maybe it’s a tad colder or hotter or rainier or maybe even buggier, but I say: So what! The most critical difference is that—usually—it’s cheaper to visit. In the Caribbean, where low season kicks into gear around mid-May, conditions tend not to be too terribly different from high season. A few years ago my  . . . Continue Reading

Style Inspiration: Optical Oversized Sweater

Jane Flanagan

I'm going to fess right up: This Style Inspiration is completely self-serving. I love big oversized sweaters and I've had my eye on this one from Micaela Greg for the longest time. Sweaters like these are perfect for transitional seasons, when you want to cast off your coat but it isn't quite sensible to go without something cozy.

Nice Cream: DIY Ice Cream for the Lactose Intolerant

Amy Palanjian

pistachio ice cream

After my post about non-dairy ice cream last week, Bonny emailed in to tell me about what she's been doing at home to cure her ice cream cravings.

As a person who can't digest dairy but is addicted to dairy (why are we always addicted to things we are allergic to?), I've been trying to make dairy free ice cream for a long time.  . . . Continue Reading
