You Should Make Homemade Rhubarb Hand Pies

Amy Palanjian

The Des Moines farmers market starts tomorrow for the season and I am itching to get my hands on some rhubarb so that I can make these Rhubarb Hand Pies with Orange and Cardamom from over on So Good and Tasty. And I think I'm going to have to serve them on pretty china just so I can recreate this image for myself. Image via So Good and Tasty; Click here for the recipe.

Shiso: It’s Not Just For Sushi Anymore

Louisa Shafia

Pickled Red Shiso with Radishes If you’ve had sushi, you’ve probably had shiso, but you might not know what shiso is. Strangely, even though it’s got a lot of smokey, meaty flavor, so much so that it’s also referred to as “beefsteak plant,” this herb is most often used as the disposable green garnish under a sushi roll, or as an ornamental garden plant. But  . . . Continue Reading

A Crayola-Inspired Landscape

Erin Loechner

When I first glanced at these gorgeous photos at The Daily Mail, I honestly though I was looking at a modern interpretation of landscape art. Certainly this can't be...real? Right? Wrong. You're not looking at a glorified art installation. In fact, this is nothing more than an aerial shot of over sixty million tulips budding in early May in the Northern Netherlands. Proof that design really is in the everyday. Gorgeous.

Envelop Totes: Print-on-Demand Bags

Jane Flanagan

I know I've already done one tote post this season, but when I discovered Envelop, I knew I had to share. Envelop is an online print-on-demand platform, where independent illustrators can create and sell high quality cotton basics worldwide, made in Belgium, using an eco-defendable procedure. Here's a mere sampling of some of the totes on offer.

Lovin’ for An Oven: How We Reclaimed a Vintage Stove With Natural Cleaners

Claire Joyce

Since moving into our home in August we have been garage sale shopping like it is our job on the weekends and trolling our local Craigslist for furniture deals. Craigslist has been an amazing source. I love being able to take something that someone no longer needs/wants/uses and giving it a new life in our house. Our favorite new acquisition? A  . . . Continue Reading

Flickr Picks: Edward Cullen Baby Chew Toy

Katherine Sharpe

I'm not even a Twilight reader, but this infant chew toy in the likeness of Edward Cullen, the conscientious teen vampire hero of the ubiquitous series, made me laugh out loud when I discovered it in ReadyMade's Flickr pool. Its creator, Marigold Haske (whose work I seem to be becoming a fan of), says at her original post about the toy,

It's difficult to see in the picture, but the  . . . Continue Reading

Earthly Artworks Offer A Tranquil Escape

Keith Mulvihill

I’ve always been intrigued by artists who use nature and the earth to create art. One of my favorite documentaries is Rivers and Tides: Andy Goldsworthy Working With Time, which shows Goldsworthy creating all sorts of temporary art installations out of sticks or stones or ice. I love how the film captures the beauty in the ephemeral. If you visit the Presidio of San Francisco, you  . . . Continue Reading

Reflectius Clock by Art Lebedev Studio

Jaime Derringer

Everything that comes out of Art Lebedev Studio has me saying things like "clever" or "wow!" or "that's so cool!" The Reflectius Clock is no exception. The clock has 60 rotating mirrors that reflect a single laser beam at precise angles to draw the numbers. Yes, a laser beam. Even the body of the clock is angular to mimic what's going on inside.

Joan Jett, by Todd Oldham

Melissa Goldstein

It’s not that I don’t appreciate the merit of songs such as “Bad Reputation” and “I Love Rock 'n' Roll”—or  masterful cover versions of songs such as Tommy James and the Shondells’ “Crimson and Clover.” I do. But, have I ever had a W.W.J.D. (What Would Joan Do) moment? I have not. This, in spite of the fact that I truly admire the part she has played in cementing women’s rightful place in music.  . . .
