Hair Craft (and Tutorial!)

My roommate came back from her haircut with a glow. She’s in the fashion industry—and is always broke accordingly—so splurging on a new ‘do meant a lot to her. But there was something else. “My stylist,” she excitably explained, “she makes wigs for Katy Perry! And she makes hair crafts!”
What the eff are hair crafts and huh, Katy Perry?
“You know ‘California Gurls’? She made all the wigs in that music video!”
Oh yes, I knew that song, alright: its poppy lyrics and bubble-gum beats always overpowered Wu-Tang in my headphones at the gym.
So even if I knew who Katy Perry was, I still needed to figure out what hair crafts were. So I set off to Tomahawk Salon, a whopping seven-minute walk from my place in Bushwick, Brooklyn, to do some investigating.
Tomahawk is one of the Shops at The Loom—an ex-textile mill turned part residency, part mall, with a gallery, a moped shop, a yarn workshop, and a bakery, among a few other stores on its first floor. Tomahawk’s owner, Chantal Savaresse, lived near that building for six years and owned the vintage and design store Femme Fatale in Williamsburg before deciding to dedicate all of her energy to this space off of Flushing Avenue.

Savaresse’s new spot is evocative of her previous one, with a selection of clothing made by local designers and décor consisting of vintage furniture and other paraphernalia that decks the walls. Almost a year since its opening, Savaresse is still making the place her own, painting the back wall with vertical stripes or adding new art. When I walked in, she was hanging antique photos, drill in hand, while talking DIY horror films with stylist Kristin Jackson and her client mid color-process.
The two stylists met through mutual friends before Savaresse asked Jackson to join her at Tomahawk. Jackson—who I soon found out was dubbed Katy Perry's "Wig Specialist"—adds to the handmade vibe of Tomahawk with her quirky crafts like hair-woven sunglasses (for real) and duct tape flowers.
