Non-Dairy Ice Cream: Love It or Hate It?
Amy Palanjian
Has anyone had Alkemie Dairy-Free Ice Cream? A year or so ago, I tasted some amazingly delicious coconut-milk based ice cream at the Natural Products Expo and while I can't remember the brand, it did convince me that ice cream alternatives do have their merit. That said, I've also experienced some truly unremarkable varieties...particularly ones with a soy base. Yuck.
Alkemie, which is currently sold in Northern California Whole Foods and specialty shops, has a cashew and coconut base, which sets it apart from most of its competitors. The company was founded by Daniel Clary, a 28-year old entrepreneur and vegan chef who tinkered and tweaked for a year and a half before getting his product right. (That must have been fun!) I, for one, am getting very excited for the start of ice cream season (by which I mean the season when the local ice cream shops are open, because I eat it all year round!) and would hear your thoughts on dairy free ice cream.
Furthermore, has anyone ever tried making coconut milk or cashew based ice cream at home?
