Doodads on a Dime: 5 Ways to Open Wine
Marc Matsumoto

As a followup to my post on 5 ways to open a bottle of beer, here are 5 ways to open a bottle of wine without a corkscrew. These run the gamut from practical to inspired to down-right unsafe, still we've all been caught without a corkscrew at times, so here are a few novel ways to get that pesky cork out. What's your favorite method?
1. With a Screw
Don't have a corkscrew? Make your own with a screw, screwdriver and a lever. It's not the most creative or fastest method, but it works, and it's probably one of the safest of the five.
2. With a Pen
Using a pen (or any other long object) to push the cork into the bottle is something we've all probably done at one point and while it's not the most elegant method, it works in a pinch.
3. With a Tree
This is probably the most practical method as you really don't need anything other than a vertical surface to bang the wine bottle on. I also love the lackadaisical attitude of this dude which is only heightened by the music. Make sure you wrap the bottle in something as you have to whack it pretty hard to get the cork to come out and there's always the chance that it might break.
4. With Heat
I'm not really sure how practical (or safe) this one is, as most of us don't have red hot tongs that fit around the neck of a bottle, but from a pure novelty perspective, this is by far the coolest of the bunch.
5. With a Knife
This just doesn't seem very safe, and as a chef, the sight of someone destroying a knife on a bottle makes me cringe, but I've tried it on several empty bottles using the back-side of a long flat bread knife and I got a clean break with one stroke every time. That said, I would not try this on a full bottle of wine as there's always the risk of getting a stray shard of glass in your wine.
