I'm always looking for a new cocktail, so when I spotted
Kelly's nod to the happy hour staple, The Old Fashioned, I was eager to give it a try. Kelly called her version the New Old Fashioned because of the colorful addition of blood orange instead of plain ol' OJ. I like the way she thinks. As she warns in her writeup, these puppies are strong...like punch-drunk love strong. But that's not a bad thing at all.
Blood oranges are in season, so I I made her version for some friends switching out bourbon for the rye and they were very easily enjoyed. However, I did find them a bit sweet for my taste.
So I decided to take this drink one step further in the name-game and have christened it The New Newfangled. It's got bourbon (I've tried both Wild Turkey and Jack Daniels for strict comparison purposes only), freshly-squeezed blood orange juice, and a bit of fresh lemon juice for tartness. The agave syrup subs in for the standard sugar cube and the amount can be adjusted to your tastebuds. Cheers!
The New-Newfangled
2 oz bourbon
1/2 teaspoon agave syrup
a few splashes of orange bitters
1/2 oz blood orange juice
1/2 oz lemon juice
2 ice cubes
2 inch piece of blood orange rind
In a cocktail shaker, combine the bourbon, agave, bitters, juice and ice together. Give a good shake and pour into a glass. Fold the orange rind in half and squeeze it over the drink. Drop into beverage. Drink up, friend!
