I'm just going to come right out and say it: My household is a kefir-buying household. My fiance is the kefir buff—he prefers the consistency better than yogurt and likes to have it poured over homemade granola after a morning run. It's a fast, filling breakfast that's tangy and nutritious to boot. So when I had the chance to bring home a sample container of a new frozen kefir, I had to accept.

And just to be sure that we're on the same page:

Kefir is a cultured probiotic beverage similar in taste and texture to drinkable yogurt, and made from milk fermented with kefir cultures. Originating over 2000 years ago in the Caucasus Mountains-where many people live well over 100 years-kefir has been associated with a long list of health benefits.

Lifeway seems to have this health-conscious market cornered with their pints that amazingly have ten live and active probiotic cultures. (For some reason my brain wants to think that cultures would get slow and inactive when frozen—clearly I wasn't a science major!) We had the strawberry, which, like the rest of the flavors, is gluten free and 99% lactose free, making it suitable for even allergy-prone stomachs. With 90 calories, 16 g of sugar, and 1 g of fat per serving, the nutrition profile is pretty impressive too, especially for a frozen treat.

So how did it taste, and more importantly, should you buy it?

It tasted like kefir...only frozen. Which means that if you like the tart and tangy taste, or you like the Pinkberry-style of fro yo, you'll probably enjoy this. The only downside was that it was really fragrant to a point that it distracted me from the taste. The only thing I can compare the scent to was if I had stuck my face into a bag of freeze-dried strawberries, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. My kefir-loving fiance didn't seem to mind the aroma, though.

Overall, I'm giving it a thumbs up!
