Hello, my name is Sonia Zjawinski and I'm an addicted to flowers. If there's one thing in my home that I love more than anything (you know, besides the husband and kitty cats), it's a vase filled with fresh cut flowers. I can spend an entire paycheck buying new blooms at my local farmer's market. It's gotten to the point where my husband has to drag me past the bins of bouquets at Trader Joe's. I suppose I could be spending my hard earned cash on more destructive things..

In my opinion, flowers are one of the easiest way to spruce up your space. You can be unhappy with your furniture or your home's layout, but once you place a vase of peonies, tulips, or calililies on a table, everything becomes a little more manageable. Seems like Brian Johnson agrees with me.

The designer, who makes DVD holders, bamboo coasters, and metal picture frames under the name Uncommon Green, recently designed a shelf that features a vase built into it. The vase, a beautiful blue Mason jar, is built to hang ominously under the wood shelf.

You can purchase the pre-built shelf for $70 on Etsy, but Brian knows that some of you are like him, and like making things yourselves, so he's provided a how-to for this crafty project.

What You Need
  • Mason jar
  • Wood shelf
  • 2x brackets (Brian sells a beautiful pair on his Etsy shop)
  • Drill
  • 1/8-inch bit
  • 3/4-inch bit
  • 6x 1/2-inch wood screws

What to Do
  1. Figure out where you want the vase to hang.
  2. Remove the liner from the lid. Liner may be glass so be careful when removing.
  3. Predrill two holes, widely spaced from the center, into the metal cap with a 1/8-inch drill bit.
  4. Place the cap on the underside of the shelf (where you want the vase to hang) and use 1/2-inch wood screws to secure the cap to the wood shelf.
  5. Use a 3/4-inch bit to drill through the center of the mounted lid and through the wood shelf.
  6. Position brackets on the shelf, so they will just touch the wall. Attack brackets to shelf using 1/2-inch wood screws.
  7. Consult with your local hardware store on the type of mounting hardware you should use.
  8. Before you mount the shelf, use a level to make sure everything's balanced when positioning the shelf.
  9. Once mounted, screw the mason jar (filled with water) onto its cap.
  10. Place your freshly cut flowers through the hole you bore into the shelf and into your new floating vase!
