How an Apartment Feels Like Home

I haven't shared much of my own apartment here at ReadyMade but since Caitlin and Andrew are letting everyone peek in on their abodes, I thought I'd join the party. The photo above is my kitchen before we moved in. Pretty mundane, no? It was snapped on a cold Saturday morning back in December 2008, when my husband and I received the keys to our new place and stopped in to take a look around before our official January 1 move date. Our initial viewing of the apartment was fast, maybe a little too fast, and we didn't really remember what the kitchen looked like, minus the incredible sink that made me have to have this particular unit in the first place.
Unfortunately, we missed quite a few things during that whirlwind tour. The photo doesn't show the grit and grime that took one day of professional cleaning and two more days of us on hands and knees scrubbing away, wishing for decontamination suits. It doesn't show the dog hair, the chipping paint, the thick film of grease on top of the shelving and the fridge and the windows. It also doesn't picture me standing in the middle of the kitchen after the dog decided to mark three rooms of the new place (I guess he knew it was his?), close to tears, wondering why I had twisted my husband's arm on this apartment at all. It was a bad, bad Saturday morning.

But, but, but... here it is today, almost two years later, bright and shiny and clean and livable. There may still be dog hair, but it's from my own sweet mutt and is therefore kind of acceptable.
