The ICFF starts on Saturday. Here, ReadyMade talks to seasoned veteran Scott Newlin about how to get the most out of the madness. In addition to working in the Manhattan studio of prolific industrial designer Karim Rashid, Newlin, pictured below with his dog, Meow, is author of the sartorial blog Dudes In Suits. You can find Meow's blog here. scottanddog So, what's your name? Scott Newlin What do you do? I'm an industrial designer at Karim Rashid Inc. Have you been going to the ICFF for a while? For business or pleasure? This will be my third (since I moved to New York) but have been following it virtually for several years. I am in the industry, so I go to see what everyone has been working on, but mostly to hang out with all the converging designers. What's your biggest piece of advice for a newcomer? Go to a lot of the parties. Don't get too drunk. Make friends...you never know who you might be talking to. It's always great to network. Which exhibitors or events are you most looking forward to seeing? Pablo, his lighting is always really innovative and beautiful. I also want to see the Council furniture line. It's a San Francisco based company with a Euro-centric business model and style. Also, Slide, Italian roto-molded furniture. We just finished a line for them which debuted in Milan and now it's here...it looks really good. How about parties? Vitra is always packed and has some design celebs running around. There are going to be some cool things happening at the new Standard Hotel, which seems like it's the new hub of the ICFF. Rightfully so, it's an amazing building. What's your favorite thing about the ICFF? It's sooooo great to see design celebrated in the states. Like Christmas, I wish it was celebrated more than once a year. Any aspects you could do without? It's exhausting. For out-of-towners visiting the fair, are there any design-related excursions you'd recommend? Brooklyn. The food, shops, views and people are too good to miss if you want to get inspired while in NY. Specifically, The Future Perfect design shop in Williamsburg, Weather-Up bar in Prospect Heights and the view of Manhattan from DUMBO.
