Welcome to the Wednesday feature here at the ReadyMade blog. Each week, I will provide a list of upcoming events, releases and happenings for the following Thursday through Wednesday. If you have (or know of) an event that you would like to be included, please shoot me an email, and I will do my best to make it happen.
Cinema Annexinema
Friday, August 21
Nottingham, United Kingdom
The
cycle-powered cinema will launch
Hinterland 2009 (site-specific installations and events around the River Trent), with some help from London-based collective
Magnificent Revolution. Cinema
Annexinema will set up shop underneath Clifton Bridge, and you can view films with historical significance alongside performances by up and coming local artists. Ten bikes and 20 legs power the necessary audio visual equipment--600W worth! Nottingham Visual Arts asks moviegoers to not bring their cars to the event, but rather bike or take public transportation and arrive by 8 pm. Free beer from
Nottingham Brewery and delicious treats from Harvest Café will be available, and there will also be a
foraging walk earlier in the day!
P2K: The Decade in Music
Friday, August 21
Everyhwere
On Friday,
Pitchfork releases numbers 20-1 on their week-long countdown of the top 500 songs from the past decade. First of all, can you believe we are already a decade into the 21st century? And second of all, you can listen to each track on the website. It's nostalgic, like a trucker hat for the eardrums.
San Francisco Zine Fest
Saturday, August 22-Sunday, August 23
San Francisco, California
This weekend, a free conference is taking place for independent and underground publishers at the SF County Fair Building. The eighth annual
San Francisco Zine Fest draws people from all over the west coast, and includes
workshops on zines (of course) as well as many other crafty mediums.
Andy Hartzell (Fox Bunny Funny) is the special guest this year, and he has his own Q&A session so come prepared with your head-scratchers. Exhibitors will be peddling their wares, and the folks behind the festival even provide a link for
tips on how to be the best tabler you can be! They really have thought of everything…
The Art of Touring Special Event
Saturday, August 22
Portland, Oregon
A group exhibition of firsthand photography and stories about life on the road has been showing for a couple of weeks at
Fontanelle Gallery, but this Saturday marks a special occasion. The Art of Touring presents performances and readings by Sara Jaffe (
Erase Errata),
Rebecca Gates,
Tara Jane Oneil and Julianna Bright (
The Golden Bears). Touring isn’t just about the music, though that’s why they are there in the first place. It is about the little moments captured at bus breakdowns, fleabag motels, late night breakfasts and the general hullabaloo of a semi-nomadic life. So lend these musicians your ears for the evening, and enjoy story time.
Cause for Creativity: Tour da Arts
Saturday, August 22
Santa Monica, California
Join the
Santa Monica Museum of Art and
C.I.C.L.E. for an 8-mile bicycle tour of arts venues around the city. Adults and children alike are welcome, and league certified cycling instructors are leading the pack.
Tour da Arts will begin at SMMoA, then travel to
The Broad Stage,
Miles Playhouse,
18th Street Arts Center and head back to SMMoA, with special hands-on workshops at each location. The organizers say that the tour will take place at a leisurely, social pace and obey all traffic laws, perfect for the young and young at heart.
Poor Traits
Saturday, August 22
Montreal, Quebec
Headquarters Galerie + Boutique plays curator for the
Poor Traits salon-style exhibit opening Saturday. Each artist was asked to complete a from-the-shoulders-up portrait on a 12”x12” panel and the rest was left to their own devices. Since the exhibit is dense, you get the feeling that you are wandering through a large crowd. It takes a few minutes of concentration to separate out the individual image and its story, but once you do, it will be worth the effort.
Vandaveer, Divide & Conquer
Tuesday, August 25
Everywhere
Alt-folk project
Vandaveer releases its second album Tuesday. Divide & Conquer is full of four-minute odysseys, and Mark Charles Heidinger even has his sister
Rose Guerin singing harmony. The band started touring the week, so check out their
shows page to see if they will zig or zag your way.
