In each issue of ReadyMade, the MacGyver Challenge asks readers to make something useful and well-designed out of some particular piece of modern effluvium. For Issue 42, we challenged readers to reuse the humble slide carousel: the slotted, blocky apparatus that families everywhere used to use to show pictures of their vacations to yawning neighbors.
California native Evan Bee walked off as the winner of our slide carousel challenge with his design for
a grow-lamp in the round, but his wasn't the only compelling entry we received.
Reader Diana Gray fashioned hers into a Japanese table lamp---and she shares instructions for the project, after the jump.
SLIDE CAROUSEL JAPANESE LAMP
Materials:
2 slide carousels
2 bamboo placemats
Glue gun or other quick-drying glue
Screwdriver
Craft/utility knife,
3-4 rubber bumpers to use as legs on base
Masking tape or similar
A light kit with switch on the cord
Optional: Spray paint for plastic
Cost: About $10 for the light kit
1. Remove metal bases from both carousels
2. Remove plastic retainer ring from one carousel and glue to the top of that carousel
3. Break off two thin pieces of C-shaped metal from metal bases of both carousels
4. Glue both C-shaped metal pieces to bottom of second carousel opening to make a holder to anchor the light kit
5. Glue light kit onto the metal pieces attached in Step 4. Light socket will point upwards and cord will emerge from bottom of carousel.
6. Glue or stick rubber bumpers onto base to raise up 1/4" to allow for cord to exit.
7. If you are painting the carousels the color of your choice, paint them now.
8. Use a low wattage incandescent lightbulb, a flourescent or an LED. A decorative candelabra bulb would probably look best.
9. Glue placemats around the bottom carousel (use string or tape to hold until set).
10. Insert bulb into socket before attaching top carousel.
11. Glue top of placemats to second carousel so that they form a top to the lamp. The retainer ring glued to the top of this carousel should be on the top of the lamp.
12. Hold top carousel in place on top of placemats with string or tape. Your lamp is now complete.
