Because You Can’t Spell Oktoberfest Without Sauerkraut

Katherine Sharpe

According to Wikipedia, Oktoberfest in Munich has come and gone: the yearly festival of beer, sausage, and more beer traditionally takes place during the sixteen days up to and including the first Sunday in October. kraut However, I see no reason to limit our timeframe for drinking beer and eating the hearty foods that go with it. Chow has made it all a little easier by  . . . Continue Reading

Meet Mr Eaves

Katherine Sharpe

Mrs. Eaves has a new man, and he's a looker. Font nerds or borderline font nerds know about Mrs Eaves, the Emigre serif font that's taken the world by storm in the last five years or so. Last week, Emigre launched two related sans-serif font families, Mr Eaves Sans and Mr Eaves Modern. Mr Eaves Modern, in particular, reminds me a bit of Wes Anderson's beloved Futura. Check the gentleman out, below, or hop over  . . . Continue Reading

Free Halloween Amigurimi Patterns

Katherine Sharpe

As noted by the folks at Craft, Lion Brand Yarn is giving away free patterns for Halloween-themed amigurimi (a Japanese word for tiny crocheted figures).

The pumpkin and ghost are pictured above, and there are many more at Lion Brand's website (site registration is required). I'm partial to the candy corn and tiny tombstones, myself!

Riverboat Soul

Alexa Fornoff

3794235776_86c24b0ee6_o I caught quite a show this weekend in Omaha at the Pizza Shoppe Collective. The band didn't use the stage—or even mic up—and brought us over an hour of captivating acoustic sounds, hoots, hollers, and Americana. Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three hail from the banks of the muddy Mississippi and riff on ragtime and blues with a busker spirit that seems more romantic than cheesy. All four guys speak in  . . . Continue Reading

Touching allowed and encouraged

Andrew Wagner

While I am a big fan of Etsy, Supermarket, BuyOlympia, and many of the other online retail outlets available for independent makers to sell their wares they always leave me wondering what all these things feel like; how much they weigh; how they are made and how they are put together. There are of course plenty of weekend fairs and marketplaces to see the actual work and a few shops and  . . . Continue Reading

The Story From A-Z

Alexa Fornoff

leclere.zittel.unit 1992 A-Z Management and Maintenance Unit Yesterday, Andrea Zittel spoke at the Des Moines Art Center and she touched on topics from the constraints of time (and how that caused her to eat ketchup soup) to discussing limitations and how they actually increase her creativity. To be honest, ever since I watched her segment of PBS's Art:21 series, I have thought she is one of the most interesting people, and  . . . Continue Reading

Cordwainer’s Handmade Shoes

Katherine Sharpe

If you're anything like me, you can imagine making something like a dress, a shirt, a quilt---but shoes? That's not a craft skill you can fake, nor is it something you're likely to have just picked up a little of somewhere along the way. cordwainer_1 And that's why this pair of lipstick-red slip-ons caught my eye. They come from Cordwainer, a New Hampshire-based family business that still makes every pair of  . . . Continue Reading

A 3-Year Old’s Map of the Subway

Katherine Sharpe

For her 3-year-old nephew's birthday, New York-based designer Erin Jang created a custom subway map with all of his favorite places. (Click the image for a larger version.) 3966095528_520638a9de_b I love it as child's-room art. Sweet, not treacly. [via Kottke; Jang's site is The Indigo Bunting]
