I've tried to maintain a general rule of only buying kitchen appliances that make a big difference in terms of efficiency—and I have to give doing it the old fashioned way at least a decent shot. Which means my immersion blender and stand mixer are in (they have made pureeing soup and mixing batter Much easier), but a popcorn popper didn't make the cut because the old fashioned way turned out to be just fine. And actually, I have decided that popping corn on the stove is one of the most satisfying and downright cool things that I've done in the kitchen in a while—which I think is because after growing up on microwaved popcorn, I had no idea that you could make a tastier and more healthful version in the same amount of time. And stand over it as it pops! (Clearly this is my inner 6 year old talking.) I picked up a bag of organic popcorn at the supermarket and have been using the recipe on the back of the bag, which calls for a 1/2 cup of corn to 3 tbsp of oil and a bit of salt. We've made it about three times and while you do need to stand there and shake the pot so it doesn't burn as it pops, the results are delicious. The local gourmet store in town sell a selection of fancy corn—heirloom varieties from what I can tell—which I'm eager to try. If anyone has homemade toppings to share, post a comment. I'd love to try a homemade version of kettle corn!
