What’s For Dinner?

Tim Mazurek

I'm a food blogger, so you might imagine that every night I cook an elaborate dinner. Well, in my case you might only imagine an elaborate dessert. But most nights are nothing like the blog. I write about the special occasion stuff. The occasion could be as simple as having a friend over for dinner, but it generally isn't how my partner and I eat on a daily basis. We tend towards simple  . . . Continue Reading

Back to School: Fabric Book Cover Tutorial by Zakka Inspired

Polly Conway

I really miss getting school supplies every fall; picking out that perfect pencil case and making those big decisions, like choosing between blue or black pens. But just because I'm not in school anymore doesn't mean I can't do this project from Hawaiian blogger Kat of Zakka Inspired. It's an ideal use for a favorite fabric that deserves to be showcased every day!

Maybe I'll make a new  . . . Continue Reading

Interpreting Family Recipes: Will It Ever Taste as Good as Grandma’s?

Amy Palanjian

Every September (well, the past two) I've made a Huckleberry Cheesecake for my fiance's birthday. By all accounts, it's his favorite dessert. It's also one of his favorite childhood special occassion foods.

Which of course means that I am determined to get it right.

I've discovered that this is a tall order. Last year, before I knew his  . . . Continue Reading

Fur Real?

Caitlin Thornton

Last fall, fur—both real and faux—emerged as a fashion trend. And this season, it’s definitely not going away. (So much so that Chanel has actually made a fur suit. As in a suit made entirely of fur.)

Personally, I’m in love with the plush, the prints, and the textures of fur. A friend made me sob at a zoo in Sydney when she had a heart to heart with me about skinning right in front of the cheetah exhibit, so I  . . . Continue Reading

Raising the Bar: Restyling Yard Sale Patio Furniture

Claire Joyce

Summer hits Humboldt county a little bit later than other places—our grey cloudy summer has dissolved into some glorious days that have our neglected backyard begging for us to give it attention. In honor of the emergence of the sun, I took on a project that has been waiting in the wings since the end of last summer.

At a garage sale last year, we picked up this rather unappealing backyard bar for  . . . Continue Reading

Gmail’s Priority Inbox: Will You Use It?

Jaime Derringer

On Monday morning, most of us sort through endless mounds of email trying to identify which ones to read first based on the subject line or who it is from. What if there was a way to teach your email inbox to sort your email automatically? Google thinks it might have the answer...

Last week, Gmail introduced the Priority Inbox, which basically helps you identify which messages are most  . . . Continue Reading

The New Wooden Blocks

Alexa Fornoff

Even though these blocks from asherjasper are made with kiddos in mind, I can't help but think how great they would look in a non-playroom environment. The Namesake blocks include eight different hardwoods that are hand-sanded, sealed with walnut oil (but otherwise left in their natural states), and then stamped with the corresponding names. Educational, beautiful, and probably smell amazing to boot.

Free David Byrne Download!

Carmela Ciuraru

I am a longtime admirer of David Byrne—as a musician, as an artist, and as a passionate cycling activist who even designed some NYC bike racks a few years ago.

When I saw him perform live last year, it was among the most exhilarating experiences of my life. I still think about that concert.

These days, the cerebral Mister Byrne has a lot going on: collaborating with St. Vincent, contributing a  . . . Continue Reading

Travelin’ Tuesday: Wouldn’t You Like to Fly?

Polly Conway

Hello, gang! As promised, I've been traveling all over these fair states with an eye out for crafty stuff and crafty folks. But sometimes, a girl's just got to take a nice long nap on a plane. Today was a big airport day; from Portland to Denver to Austin; and I remembered how amazing air travel is. It's fast, it's clean, and while those packs of peanuts may not be as big as they used to  . . . Continue Reading

Back to School with SVA’s D-Crit Lecture Series

Lily Kane

The D-Crit (that’s Design Criticism) MFA program at the School of Visual Arts (that’s SVA) just announced a killer line-up for their free and open-to-the-public fall lecture series. New Yorkers (or autumn visitors!) interested in design and culture would do well to RSVP and attend a few of these. They keep them small, send you home full of drinks and ideas, and are truly one of the best things  . . . Continue Reading
