Summer is almost here, and if you're like me, that means a few road trips are in the works. I'm a huge fan of the license plate game and still get too excited when I spot the illusive Hawaii plates, but after taking a peek at the rad recycling book ReMake It!, I'm thinking Bingo is the way to go.

So put those stacks of magazines to good use and check out the tutorial for Magazine Travel Bingo below from author Tiffany Threadgould. Thank you so much for sharing!

Make it! Magazine Travel Bingo

Materials:
thin scrap cardboard (from a cereal box or similar)
ruler
pencil
markers
pushpin
scissors
magazines
ball point pen
tape

1. Cut your cardboard into two 8-inch x 8-inch squares. Set one aside for step 7.

2. Draw a border around the square ½ inch away from the edge. Inside the border, make marks along the top starting at 1 inch, then ½ inch, then 1 inch, alternating this way until you have a line of marks along the top, bottom, and side borders. Use your ruler to draw straight lines connecting these marks. This will create a grid of 1-inch square blocks divided by ½-inch spaces. Decorate each square block with a star or other fun design (see diagram a above).

You can go over these lines with a butter knife or open paper clip, making “score marks” that will make cutting and folding easier later.

3. Cut along each 1-inch horizontal line from border to border. Do not cut through the ½-inch spaces between the blocks or the ½ inch border you made in step 2. To make this cutting easier, poke a hole in the cardboard with a pushpin to start each cut line (see diagram b above).

4. Cut a vertical line down the center of each square block. The result should look like a 5 x 5 grid of windows with shutters. Fold the “shutters” outward to get a straight crease (see diagram c above). Place a ruler along each fold line to make it easier to fold neatly. Then place them back down again.

5. Find magazine images of things you might see from the car on a road trip. Cut each picture into a square about 1¼-inch x 1¼-inch. You’ll need 25 of these images to fill the game board. If you can’t find an image you can always draw it or write the name of it behind the shutters. Mark the center space as a FREE space.

6. Tape the square images, face out, to the back of your board, one per square (see diagram d above).

7. Take the second 8 inch x 8 inch cardboard square you made in step 1 and tape it to the back of the square with the windows and shutters. This will make your game board sturdy.

8. Repeat these instructions and make as many game boards as you’d like. You’ll have tons of ReMade fun on your next road trip.

How to play:
Start by opening all of the flaps, except for the center free space. When you spot one of the items on your board, close the flaps of that item. When you have 5 flaps closed in a row diagonally, vertically, or horizontally, you win!

This project is from the book ReMake It! Do-it-yourself recycling projects from the stuff you usually scrap.
