ReadyMade: Instructions for everyday life

Weekend Warriors: Furniture Gang

Welcome to “Weekend Warriors.” Every Friday, we run a shining example of a reader’s recent makings—to say TGIF and send you off right into your own weekend’s projects.

tree_watercolorRun by four B.Arch grads from the University of Oregon, Furniture Gang bills itself as an “inter-disciplinary design studio” dedicated to the “re-emergence of the craft culture.”

If you feel ready to fire up your pencils this month, Furniture Gang has got an incentive for you: at the end of August, they’re hosting their second annual Furniture Design Marathon (Furnathon!) They explain it all at their blog, but basically, they’re looking for original designs submitted in whatever form you prefer–renderings, videos, back-of-the-napkin sketches–for products, furniture, or small space ideas. What they’re interested in seems to be wide open, but as Furniture Gang’s public relations manager, Rhianna, explained to me, “a lot of times, we’re looking for innovative and practical designs that usually aren’t made by the everyday, professional architect/designer.” So think useful but offbeat.

The Furnathon is “for the exercise of creative expression,” meaning there are no prizes above seeing your project promoted on the Gang’s website and blog, but entrants retain all rights of ownership to their projects. It’s about sharing ideas and having fun. And allowing your brilliant idea for a modular balcony or an interior stoop to finally see the light of day.

The Furnathon runs from August 24th to 30th; designers may submit up to one design per day. Pace yourselves, be creative, and don’t forget to hydrate.
