Welcome to the Wednesday feature here at the ReadyMade blog. Each week, I will provide a list of upcoming events, releases and happenings for the following Thursday through Wednesday. If you have (or know of) an event that you would like to be included, please shoot me an email, and I will do my best to make it happen.
Design Santa Fe
Thursday, October 1 through Saturday, October 3
Santa Fe, New Mexico
RM’s fearless leader Andrew Wagner is taking on Design Santa Fe as part of a four-person panel titled “Beauty Collaboration Design.” The three-day conference also boasts seven home tour projects, including the Co-op House featuring the work of student, interior and furniture designers. Click here for the rest of the schedule and tickets.
Water Woman Festival
Thursday, October 1 through Sunday, October 4
Joshua Tree, California
An event for interactive and eco art, the Water Woman Festival aims to build functional art and living spaces that will last at least 200 years. It fuses permaculture, green technology and sustainable living to explore new ways of living, and then empowers the attendees to bring those ideas back home to their own communities.
Anthony Tammaro at Wexler Gallery
Friday, October 2 through Saturday, October 31
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Jewelry designer Anthony Tammaro is taking over the second floor of the Wexler Gallery to showcase his innovative baubles. He was a Weekend Warrior on the blog in July, and is now opening a show in conjunction with DesignPhiladelphia 2009. He sure does now how to keep busy.
Le Flash Atlanta 2009
Friday, October 2
Atlanta, Georgia
The opening event of Atlanta Celebrates Photography, Le Flash, takes over Castleberry Hill District from dusk until midnight on Friday. Featuring lights, performances and art, Le Flash has over 50 site-specific installations to illuminate dark lots, forgotten buildings, galleries and streets. And a dozen dancers flowing among the crowd (from Lauri Stallings of gloATL) set the tone for the rest of the evening. Light it up.
Mary Smull: Finished Works
Now through Saturday, October 31
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
What happens when you don’t finish something you begin? In the case of needlepoint, Mary Smull will likely buy it on eBay and complete the rest with white yarn. Take a peek at The Society for the Prevention of Unfinished Needlepoint exhibit at Bridgette Mayer Gallery and join the conversation about the relationship between labor, leisure and whether the final outcome is worth it.
Stop/Action
Friday, October 2 through Sunday, October 11
Brooklyn, New York
26×3 gallery puts the pedal to the metal and hosts an exhibition that shows you just what a high-speed motorcycle ride is like. Sam Strauss-Malcolm and Tyler Poniatowski are behind Stop/Action, sponsored by Hell for Leather Magazine, which suspends Aprilia bikes in a ribbon throughout the space. Think of it as sequential movie reel stills, but in 3D.
Ephemerisle Festival
Friday, October 2 through Sunday, October 4
Sacramento River Delta, California
A floating festival of arts, politics and community from the Seasteading Institute is taking over the waters of the Sacramento River Delta this weekend, and Ephemerisle participants are ready to make the most of this eclectic community on the water. Even though there will be plenty to look at, the festival-goers are the ones that dictate the programming. By bringing their own activities, art and independent thinking, the participants actually define what Ephemerisle is.
Models of Concern
Tuesday, October 6 through Sunday, October 25
New York City, New York
Making its US debut at the Trespa Design Centre in Soho, Models of Concern explores the nuances of model-making and design, and also includes three different lectures. Several models are from the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam—currently undergoing a renovation—so you get a sneak peek, too.
–Album Releases–
Tuesday, October 6
Everywhere
Meshell Ndegeocello
Devil’s Halo
Meshell Ndegeocello’s eighth album, Devil’s Halo, draws from influences across the board: Yes, Wu Tang and The Human League… and still retains the handmade feeling that keeps enthusiasts of the multi-instrumentalist coming back. Listen here.
The Clientele
Bonfires on the Heath
They already have a record that has been hailed as one of the best of the decade, and The Clientele is returning to those roots with Bonfire on the Heath. Described as “timeless and eerie,” the band wishes not only to evoke a unique sound, but a unique world. Listen here.
