Make Yourself a Fancy Embellished Velvet Headband

cd86fe1a842692cc46668d90fffd27f7

When you finish tricking out your tights, maybe it will be time to make one of these delightful headbands. Perfect for a fancy event or to give as a gift. I can think of a handful of my cousins and friends who would LOVE to get one of these. I might need to investigate trying these for myself! Full tutorial at Project Wedding.

These are amazing, though I’d imagine slightly heartbreaking to get a run in them.

How to Resize a Vintage Sweater

pink cashmere

I knew this had to be possible, and now there’s proof. Sarai at Sweet Sassafras found herself in a common situation—her grandmother had passed down a lovely pink cashmere sweater that never fit quite right: it was too baggy, too boxy, too frumpy.

Sarai hazarded an experiment with straight pins and a little beginner-level sewing machine action, and the attempt paid off in a fitted sweater with a new lease on life, and a wooly flower pin made from the scraps.

It’s great to have an excuse not to pass up future tempting but too-big thrift store finds.

This darling creation (called spring branch) from Amy Stewart’s Five Trees shop on etsy is just another reason that I am currently obsessing over pincushions.

Stained Glass in Philadelphia: A Visit With Judith Schaechter in Sad City

On Wednesday evening the New York Yankees beat the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series (boo!). On Thursday I went to the City of Brotherly Love to visit with stained glass artist Judith Schaechter (below, Monument).

Monument

The city was quiet and morose in a way that I’ve only experienced one other time in San Francisco—the night the Giants fell to the Angels in the 2002 World Series. But Judith Schaechter is not one to let a baseball game bring her down and she greeted me at her door with all the good humor and joyful snark anyone who knows her might expect. (more…)

Paper Food Never Looked So Delicious

I’m just going to say it: this bacon is really cute. Sarah Illenberger took to the scissors to make a recipe for chili con carne, and I think it looks positively delicious.

Non*Mart: The New Barter System

outside

Kathryn Kenworth and Sasha Petrenko of San Francisco think that we are spending beyond our means and our current currency system is severely lacking. They believe now, more than ever, is the time to discover a more personal avenue for exchange: and the answer is Non*Mart.

Opening on November 6, the two month experiment bases its commerce on trade, stripping back flashy packaging, advertising, and marketing. The idea is to get both buyers and sellers interested in trading for their respective wares: art, designs, clothing, services, etc.

Kathryn says: We believe that it is time for Non*Mart. We are spending beyond our means to keep up with the lure of consumerism, meanwhile, the economy is in crisis and the planet is slowly becoming littered with junk. As artists and creative people, it is time to intervene, now is the time to make community, now is the time to turn the junk we’re inheriting into something beautiful, useful, new.

On Friday night from 6-8 pm, join the ladies for a book swap, fashion exchange, and logo removal service along with ever-popular drinks and snacks, and experience the new alternative to bill-swapping.

Rock N Reconstruct

Picture 2

A Des Moines native, Sarah Johnson started her reconstructed vintage clothing line five years ago in Los Angeles before heading back to Iowa earlier this year. Rock N Reconstruct features one of a kind modifications, and she’s even turned out bikinis in addition to dresses and tops (okay, so it’s not exactly bikini season, but it is ruffly and bright for this November day!). Sarah says on her web site:

I never want to become the designer that mass produces and has a dumb logo T-shirt. All of my pieces are one-of-a-kind and made by my own two hands. My mom is my treasure hunter as she sends me vintage clothes from Iowa…”

Wedding Wednesdays: Lindsey and Todd

Welcome to the third installment of Wedding Wednesdays. On the first and third Wednesday of each month, we will share a lovely handmade wedding with you. Check out our previous installments here from St. Paul and here from Omaha. If you know of a wedding that we simply need to feature, please email us!

For Lindsey and Todd, their wedding day was not about the perfect hairdo or flashy tuxedos, but about family and using little touches to make it their own. With a modest budget and Lindsey at the reins, the two transformed a public space in Cleveland into an intimate get together for the people they love.

I knew right off the bat there would be no tuxedos involved. I really wanted the feeling to be sophisticated, yet casual. Both Todd and I are pretty laid back, and I think we wanted the wedding to reflect that. Todd was more than happy to let me take the reins. There were times before everything came together that he would look at the random assortment of junk inside a shopping bag and raise his eyebrows, like ‘Where is she going with this?’, though he did insist on being in charge of the adult beverages. But other than that, I just kind of ran with it. I had a picture in my head, and it was really fun to try to get to that place in real life with a very modest budget. Most of the whimsy-meets-nature decor was purchased from The Flower Factory, a wholesale supply store. We decided against traditional attendants—we knew our friends would have more fun without the stress, cost, and responsibilities of the typical bridesmaids and groomsmen, and it made planning easier as well. My mother stood for me, Todd’s father for him, my brothers walked me down the aisle, and my son Milo was the ringbearer. I bought apple green silk ties for the men and asked them to wear white button-down shirts and chocolate brown trousers. My motto through the whole planning process was to keep it simple, yet sophisticated.

The Highly Pleasing Result of Dousing a Pumpkin or Two in Glitter

09-10 GlitteredPumpkins4

Yes, these are somewhat Martha-esque, but they further support something we say in reference to embellishing store-bought holiday decorations in our Dec/Jan issue: covering something in glitter equals instant glam. And it makes you look like you know what you’re doing, even if you’re all thumbs around a glue gun. (Though, for the record, Livy at A Field Journal, who made these, definitely knows her stuff.)
