New Orleans, Louisiana

With 24 hours of programmed drawing booths, workshops, games, and other activities, the Press Street Draw-A-Thon at The Green Project facilitates literally thousands of drawings that wind up covering every inch of the space. Also, it’s a free, all ages event where you can release some creative energy.

Since 1998, the New York Bike Messenger Foundation (NYBMF) has organized Cranksgiving to act as both a competition and a food drive. Last year, the alleycat race donated over $1,000 worth of food items to Saint Mary’s Soup Kitchen and over $1,600 to City Harvest. Each rider has one hour to find the participating grocery stores in Manhattan, purchase the designated items, and head to the finish line. In order to participate, you just need to register at the event and race!

Cherokee, North Carolina

Construction began on the Blue Ridge Parkway in 1935, the longest planned single-unit road in US history. After 75 years, this elongated park is the most heavily visited part of the National Parks Service. Kicking off the anniversary celebration this weekend, the schedule through January includes lectures, tours, concerts, history days, and ends with the Blowing Rock Winter Festival to wrap things up.

In her second solo exhibit at Mixed Greens, Kimberley Hart and her alter-ego take on the less glittery role of battling an unknown adversary through drawing and sculpture. In its 16th year, SOFA Chicago takes over Navy Pier for three days of art, sculpture, lecture, and innovation. Some of the exhibits even forgo the traditional tradeshow booth and are taking over a space showcasing installations exactly how the artists envision. Five special exhibits explore the work of Sam Maloof, Israeli jewelers, wood turning, global glass, and ceramicists. Get tickets here.

Everyone loves them, everyone hates them, and everyone wants to be in them. Since we will most likely never make the pages of Vanity Fair, we have taken matters into our own hands. As part of our ongoing Society Pages, we present you with…A Night of Wes Anderson.

Food, drinks, prizes, projected Wes Anderson films, costumes, music and theme rooms…nothing was left untouched or un-Andersonized on Saturday night at the Colonade in Des Moines, Iowa. Right when you walked in, the lovely hostesses greeted you and asked that you sign a petition to bring back Latin—did you hear that they’re not going to teach it anymore?

There were costumes from Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic and The Darjeeling Limited, and even a personified Futura Bold “F,” the hallmark typography of Wes Anderson.

Organized by Design Platform Eindhoven, Dutch Design Week is the largest such event in the Netherlands. After eight years, it has grown to include more than 1,500 designers—tried and true brands right through recent graduates—in over 60 locations around the city. Exhibits will include textile, fashion, spatial design, food design and design management and trends, and take you from concept to execution on several of the products.

A multi-gallery event celebrating the Los Angeles contemporary art scene takes over the Municipal Art Gallery this weekend. More than 15 galleries are represented at Beyond Eden and the organizers expect over 5,000 people to meander through the exhibits. In Barnsdall Art Park, artists paint live in the Artist Village curated by the galleries in the fair. Check out the screenprinters and performance artists while you’re there, too.

They don’t want any drugstore cowboys at Ruidoso Downs this weekend, only authentic ones that have “rode the ride.” Since 1990, the Lincoln County Cowboy Symposium has been playing host to the world’s finest chuckwagon cooks, cowboy poets and western artisans for three days of events, contests and workshops. The Texas Playboys will get the crowd stomping and Cee Dubb will tell you how to cook with a Dutch oven.

During Weekend Edition Saturday on NPR, another potentially f&%*ing awesome job was discussed: that of the American jouster. Not only has veteran Richard Alvarez spent 11 years with a lance in hand,  he has also directed a documentary on the lives of the modern day knights (and it doesn’t just revolve around Renaissance fairs).
