Mason Jennings, A ReadyMade Concert Series

Mason-Jennings-Poster

A nondescript overcast day in Des Moines turned out to be something else entirely for our inaugural ReadyMade Concert Series. We took over the second floor lounge, set up an old project as a backdrop, and let Mason Jennings make it a much, much brighter day for everyone.

On tour in support of his latest effort Blood of Man, Mason Jennings and his band dropped by the RM offices to sing some ditties and color outside the lines. (Literally, they were a half hour late to sound check due to the impromptu art session during the interview—check out the video at the bottom of the post for the full story.) After playing three tracks from the album, he and his mates headed to our conference room to talk shop.

Why You Runnin’?

6a00d8341c974f53ef0120a5ec7552970b-450wi

Hailing from middle America, Lissie brings just enough folk for comfort and just enough blues for toe-tapping. Wrap that up in a raspy voice and out comes Why You Runnin’, her debut EP released today. It’s no wonder she’s joining Ray LaMontagne on the road; Lissie is the kindred spritely Midwestern spirit to his woodsy New England one. Click here for dates.

Riverboat Soul

3794235776_86c24b0ee6_o

I caught quite a show this weekend in Omaha at the Pizza Shoppe Collective. The band didn’t use the stage—or even mic up—and brought us over an hour of captivating acoustic sounds, hoots, hollers, and Americana.

Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three hail from the banks of the muddy Mississippi and riff on ragtime and blues with a busker spirit that seems more romantic than cheesy. All four guys speak in a sort of drawl that isn’t quite Southern and isn’t quite country, but a sort of timeless down home twang that makes their hats and suits and ties sincere. With a menagerie of instruments including a banjo, stand-up base, guitar, washboard, snare, harmonica, and kazoo, Pokey can get anyone stomping their feet and daydreaming about boxcars and whiskey.

Check them out on their 22 state tour, or pick up their new record, Riverboat Soul.

Bicycle Diaries ByrneBicycle Diaries Book Release
Thursday, September 17
Everywhere

David Byrne tells a tale of life on a folding bicycle, one that has been in the making for a couple of decades. The Talking Heads frontman divides Bicycle Diaries based on world cities he took in from the vantage point of a bike seat, and proceeds to describe humanity exactly as he sees it. Sometimes praising, sometimes questioning, Byrne describes streets, people and animals in a way that is always interesting. A touch of whimsy rounds out the printed book, in the form of an animated bicycle making its way across each page. A nice addition to an already lovely read.
