One-Two Punch

A sort of hybrid of two ReadyMade Small Spaces projects, the Infiniski Manifesto House from James & Mau combines shipping containers and wooden pallets to form a breezy, modern structure in Chile. It looks like quite a place to escape…for more images, click here.

Afternoon Smile from Christoph Niemann

06blago

Christoph Niemann’s “Abstract City” posts on the New York Times website are, as the first commenter noted, “always worth the wait” indeed. Peep his latest, Bio-Diversity. I’m not sure I could even describe what Niemann does, but I’m glad he does it.

Reusable Tissues? You Read Right.

cardboard-tissue-photocardboard-box

Or you could just call it a hankie. Better For GrownUps‘ new sateen reusable tissues hit the market just in time for flu season. Definitely an improvement over the gobs of paper tissues that find their way to waste baskets everywhere, the organic cotton sateen fabric means they are both soft and strong, two necessary adjectives for anything touching itchy, sneezing noses. The box has two trays for hygenic separation, and you can throw the dirties straight into the laundry.

Higher Education

dzn_Forest-Classrooms-by-Robert-Gaukroger-18

Three treetop classrooms could be the cure for all mid-geometry daydreaming at the Elleray Preparatory School in the UK. Designed by Robert Gaukroger of Kita Design Company, the pods were built with environmental impact and sustainability in mind. The center platform decking, made from recycled plastic milk bottles, will even be used as an outdoor classroom in the warmer months. Kind of makes you want to hit the books again…especially with those views of Lake District National Park.

By Can-dle Light

Interesting reuse of the day: David Keller took an extremely familiar item and by keeping its original form, made something completely different. The can light comes sealed, and you pop the top to let out as much light as you see fit.

Grownup Tree House

treebuilding-ed01

Whole Trees Architecture, one of the most transparent names in the history of business it seems, builds homes using entire trees. Practicing the theory that unmilled trees support 50% more weight than their lumberyard counterparts, the firm uses “weed trees” that other companies consider scrap. This results in sustainable forest management, locally sourced materials, local labor, and a truly stunning interior—like a tree house for grownups.

Jamesplumb and the Emotional Appeal of Lamps

Hannah Plumb and James Russell are two trained sculptors who do business together as JAMESPLUMB. Together they specialize in putting “the overlooked and discarded” materials of the world back together into pleasing new forms, with a particular emphasis on light.

jamesplumb lamp

Made from an antique roller skate and a cast-off angle-poise light, their “Charles Munn” assemblage is a piece that reminds me of ReadyMade’s own patron saint, Marcel Duchamp.

It also reminded me of the recent Spike Jonze ad for Ikea. The droopy heads, the skinny necks…is there just something about lamps that inherently evokes pathos?

The Weekly Forecast: 11.11-11.18

Picture 1Blue Ridge Parkway’s 75th Anniversary
Thursday, November 12 (opening weekend)
Cherokee, North Carolina

Construction began on the Blue Ridge Parkway in 1935, the longest planned single-unit road in US history. After 75 years, this elongated park is the most heavily visited part of the National Parks Service. Kicking off the anniversary celebration this weekend, the schedule through January includes lectures, tours, concerts, history days, and ends with the Blowing Rock Winter Festival to wrap things up.

Opening Thursday, November 12
New York City, New York

In her second solo exhibit at Mixed Greens, Kimberley Hart and her alter-ego take on the less glittery role of battling an unknown adversary through drawing and sculpture. Gone is the glitter and in its place are weapons and predatory species in this new-found dystopia. See her portfolio, and previous tales, here (a favorite is the Hunting Stand With Unicorn Bait).

A Punchy Tiled Wall…Or Is It?

Lovely wall that looks like tiles from afar…

That’s actually made with bundles of magazines! Very cool and a wise storage solution if you’ve been hoarding mags for years and years.

Reading Wall

Picture 1

EventArchitectuur, a firm out of Amsterdam, has every bibliophile swooning. These floor-to-ceiling bookcases read fine art just as much as utilitarian, and they could hold a collection of anything really—not just books. Check out their site under the tag “office” for the same treatment given to interior walls, closets, and storefronts.
