Don’t want to spend your vacation time (and money) waiting for your luggage at the baggage carousel? Then don’t! Here’s how to pack a week’s worth of clothes into one carry-on.
Get a duffel. A hard-shell suitcase may look sleek, but you’ll regret it when it comes time to board. “The soft-sided luggage is lightweight and has more give when you’re trying to squish it into an overhead bin,” advises flight attendant and blogger Sara Keagle (theflyingpinto.com).
Plan outfits. “A little time planning day-to-day clothes will save you lots of space and aggravation,” Keagle says. On her packing list for a weeklong trip: a pair of jeans, one pair of black pants, tights, a skirt or a dress, and six or seven tops, mostly knit or cotton. “Mix and match your outfits with neutral shades,” she advises. “I bring a lot of costume jewelry, scarves, and belts, which are easy to pack.”
Pack shoes first. “I never bring more than two pairs of shoes and one pair of sneakers,” Keagle says. “If I need boots, I wear them while traveling.” Then make the most of your shoes by fitting small items like socks inside. To keep your shoes from dirtying your clothes, Keagle recommends covering them with shower caps.
Roll, don’t fold. You’ll be able to fit more clothes this way. The tighter and larger the roll, the fewer wrinkles your clothes will suffer, so don’t be afraid to roll entire outfits together. For heavy garments like thick sweaters, Keagle recommends compression sacs to reduce the volume.
