Sun Boxes: A Symphony of Light and Sound
-
Slide 1/8“One of the things that blows me away about Sun Boxes, is how well it fits in any space,” Colorusso says. “It’s a system that interacts with nature. I went into a studio with Sun Boxes, and I was really excited because we used good mics in a great room. It felt odd in there, and listening back it just didn’t feel right. A few weeks later, filmmaker Kevin Belli, filmed the piece in a state park out here in Massachusetts. While listening to the audio of that shoot I realized what was missing from the studio recordings: It was all the non Sun Boxes audio—the grass blowing, the crickets, the people, and the sounds of being outside. They are all part of the piece.” -
Slide 2/8“The interesting thing about Sun Boxes, is it looks and sounds very organic. The wood has a clear coat on it to show the grain. The sound has a flow to it that’s soothing. It flows in a very natural way. Yet, every setting Sun Boxes look totally alien. It’s obvious they are not naturally occurring items.” -
Slide 3/8“Most participants are very familiar with the locations before Sun Boxes come to town. It’s remarkable when people see things they never noticed before. Sun Boxes has the ability to transform a space.” -
Slide 4/8“It’s a very interactive piece. The obvious interaction begins with the proximity of the participant to the speakers. The piece sounds different from within the array.” -
Slide 5/8“I encourage participants to wander through the speakers. Given the option, two people will take different paths through the array, hearing the composition differently. All paths allow the participant to feel surrounded by the sound.” -
Slide 6/8“If clouds cover the sun, they can either cause Sun Boxes to lower in volume or turn off altogether. But when the sun comes through they all start up together which I find to be glorious. Sun Boxes is a system that improvises with Mother Nature. Physically it sits in any landscape, and sonically the music interacts with the ambient sounds of the environment.” -
Slide 7/8“Technology and nature are often pitted against each other," Colorusso says. “I don’t think technology should replace nature. At best, technology can mimic nature to make our lives better.” -
Slide 8/8“So, what I am continually amazed by is how Sun Boxes offers a constant stream of unique experiences. In this cut and paste world we live in, I feel bombarded by mass production. I find it refreshing to experience these once in a lifetime moments. That’s what I take away from the piece. There are so many things happening in the world with a minimal amount of awareness I can be part of some of it.”
