Tips for gathering your materials and tools

Some great places to find metal pieces are on the ground near construction sites, car repair shops, and near dumpsters. To find the clasp, chain, jump rings, and beads use broken jewelry, a thrift store, or your local craft/hobby store. You can find the optional felting needles, upholstery foam and wet felting supplies at a sewing/craft store or online. Be sure to get upholstery foam that is thicker than the length of your felting needles. Note: the wet felting supplies are not shown in the supplies picture.

2

Design the layout of the Necklace

Before you start, use the sandpaper to smooth any rough edges on your found metal pieces and wash them with soap and water. Use the wire cutters and pliers to disassemble the broken/thrift jewelry and harvest the needed clasp, chain, jump rings, and beads.

Use the string to measure how long you want your necklace by tying it to one side of a metal piece and adjusting the length around your neck. Lay out your string, clasp, chain, jump rings, and two found metal pieces in front of you. Move the pieces around to decide how you want the necklace to look.

3

Assemble and adjust the necklace

Once you have designed a layout, use the pliers and jump rings to attach the clasp, chain and metal pieces together. You can also wrap chain around a metal piece, tie it in a knot and put a jump ring through the chain to lock it together for an added interest. Try the necklace on with several different tops and make any necessary adjustments. I made at least 5! Take the time now to adjust the necklace so it will be your go-to accessory later!

4

Creatively cover your magnets

Get crafty and cover your magnets with fabrics or felt! Sew it, needle felt it, wet felt it or anything else you can come up with... this is the fun part! The idea is to create enough magnetic possibilities to let your necklace show all your sides :)

From left to right, details of each covered magnet or piece:
Yellow/Orange silk fabric - sewn, added cut fringe
Yellow square fabric - sewn
Mustard yellow fabric - sewn
Black and white fabric - sewn
Black leather cut-out - found from broken jewelry (no magnet)
Nude fabric with blue - sewn, added chain and bead
BodyCraft Cocktail Ring - ring from my collection (no magnet)
White wool, red thread/bead - hand wet felted merino wool
Blue circle - needle felted wool blend
Blue rectangle - needle felted wool blend
Grey wool - hand wet felted merino wool
Red wool cord - one magnet at each end, hand wet felted merino wool
