Pad Notes: Letters, memos, and other effluvia pay tribute to the more cerebral work of Ingo Maurer (see inset in Step 1).

1

First, pause and admire the inspiration for this piece: Ingo Maurer's paper-based lamp, left. Then begin! On the bottom edge of the clamp light shade, use the hammer and nail to gently pound three sets of two holes, evenly spaced around the perimeter. Each set should have one hole on top of the other, about 1/2" apart.

2

Run a zip tie through each set to create three small loops on the inside of the light shade. Don’t tighten the ties all the way.

3

If using a pendant lamp, hang at the desired height. Otherwise, clamp to a piece of furniture, a windowsill, or a ledge.

4

Put the roll of wire on the floor, and pull up the end so that it looks like a giant Slinky. Thread the wire through all three zip-tie loops on the inside of the shade, making two revolutions. Let the remainder of the Slinky hang.

5

Tighten the ties and cut off any excess wire.

6

Use zip ties to attach the paper clips to the wire, tightening them so they don’t slip down the wire. To get the look pictured here, space the paper clips about 6" apart.

7

Attach your art (it should entirely conceal the zip ties).

8

Plug in and admire.
