Zoe Roche of Looner finds a new gig for a tired band of festival shirts.
“While my husband and songwriting partner, Angel, is on tour with Ziggy Marley, I like to take on make-it-up-as-I-go-along craft projects. These have manifested in floppy hats made from old sweaters and wine glass charms from old gold buttons. But this project came to me when I was going through Angel’s T-shirt drawer and found a pile of particularly loud, particularly large festival shirts. I cringed at the thought of him wearing one of these beauties while sitting next to me at our favorite sushi bar. Taking notes from a tour manager who used T-shirts to cover a futon, I decided to transform the fashion faux pas into throw pillows. I’ve been cutting up clothes ever since I watched Madonna dancing to ‘Lucky Star’—so this was a perfect solution. The festival pillows are colorful, interesting, and we love the archival quality that tells the story of Angel’s world travels. Also, and just as important, he can never, ever wear them again.”

Lay out the T-shirt and cut the largest squares possible while being sure to include the graphic element of the shirt.
Place the squares together, right sides facing each other. Sew the top and both sides of the square with the sewing machine, allowing for ¼-inch to ½-inch seam. Sew the bottom, leaving a 5-inch-wide hole for pillow form.
Turn the pillow covering right side out. Insert the pillow form into the hole at the bottom.
With a needle and thread, hand-stitch the hole shut. Give it a little fluff, and you’re done!
