- Stick/twig
- Acrylic paint (I used two colors)
- Fabric remnants (I used a loose-weave cotton)
- Twine or ribbon
Materials
- Paintbrush
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun (optional)
Tools
Gather up your materials. I chose to use only two colors and went for wispy fabric—it catches the wind nicely and it's a whole lot cheaper than ribbon.
Clip off any protruding twigs on the stick, and then get out the paint and paintbrush. I painted stripes, but if you're a more talented painter than I, go big. Set aside and let dry.
Next, slice up your fabric. I didn't use any specific measurements, but did stay under one inch wide and made sure that the strands were long enough to double up and form a knot. Since I used loose-weave fabric, I just cut a bit into the fabric and then tore it the rest of the way. Repeat x3. [Note: I like the effect of loose ends in the wind, but if you'd like a more tailored look, use a rotary cutter and cutting mat.]
To add some dimension, I used butcher's twine to balance out the white fabric. Simply cut strands about the same length as your strips from Step 3.
Gather up all of the strips and find the approximate center of the grouping. After the stick has dried, knot the fabric grouping around it, and secure with a dab of hot glue if necessary.
