DIG IT: Peter Hanchak’s cardboard crater bowl was inspired by the contoured landscapes of architecture site models. -

Cut enough 3" x 10" cardboard strips to form a solid square block. You’ll need 60 to 70 strips depending on thickness. If you have access to a workshop, cut the strips with a band saw.
Glue the strips together one by one. (Be sure to apply the glue evenly.) Push the block flush against the wall to keep things good and square as you go.
Place a telephone book on the stack and wait a day for the glue to set. When the block is dry, draw a circle on top using a plate as a guide.
Now, using a drill with a standard wire-brush attachment, sculpt a bowl shape. Create one big crater in the center or a few smaller divots. Or try one larger scoop with four small dips. A band saw lets you cut the block into an even more contoured shape. Look at that: You’re a landscape architect.
