So you’re all growed up, with a temperature-controlled Posturepedic bed. Time to kick that squeaky box spring to the curb, right? Hold on. Lee Anderson, owner of the Radio Bean Coffee House in Burlington, Vermont, has a better idea. Knowing that bed coils have been user-tested and refined for decades to be both flexible and weight-bearing, Anderson decided they’d make a handy rack for his wine collection. So strip that sucker down, adjust according to the following instructions, and you’ll be the proud owner of the best idea in storage since the trundle.

Cost
$
- Box spring (preferably all metal)
- Solid (not braided) copper grounding wire
- Heavy-duty screw-in hooks
- Length of linked chain (optional)
Materials
- Needle-nose pliers
- Wire snips (optional)
Tools
Strip all the fabric away from the box spring (saving a little to patch the resulting holes in your jeans).
Slide your first bottle between the springs in the upper lefthand corner and at a slight downward angle (to keep the cork wet).
To prevent the wine from sliding out the back, use the pliers to loop a piece of copper wire from the box spring’s rear crossbar around the bottle’s neck. Make sure the bottle slides in and out of the loop easily.
Repeat steps 2 and 3 along the rows of springs.
Remove the wine bottles and hang the rack on the wall using heavy-duty hooks. Or use the hooks and linked chain to hang the rack from the ceiling.
Store your best bottles along the top row and fill the rest with the everyday stuff for easy access. A full-size (double) box spring can hold up to 60 bottles of wine.
