Framed Vertical Succulent Garden
-
I just need to fill it in with a few more plants/clippings.
Apply about four coats of varnish to the front and back of the frame. Let each coat dry completely before applying the next.
With the frame laying face down, press a large piece of 1-inch chicken wire down though the interior opening making sure it’s flush with the front of the frame. Staple the chicken wire into place on the back side of the frame. Wearing gloves, remove all the excess wire with wire cutters.
Use the 2½-inch nails to secure the four wood strips from the 2×2 (cut down from the 9-foot long piece noted above) to the back of the frame. The size of your strips will depend on the size of your frame.
Filling the frame with soil on top of the Spanish moss. Pack down the soil to minimize settling once the frame is tilted upright. Fill the soil all the way to the top of your frame.
Secure the plywood to the wood strips with the 1-inch nails. As a precaution, I slid an extra piece of plywood under the front to keep the soil/moss from squishing out through the wire mesh as we flipped the frame upright.
Once you have the frame facing mesh side up, begin filling it with your succulent clippings. Use the handle of a spoon to poke a hole in the soil and slide the plant stem/root ball into the dirt. Allow the roots to take hold before tilting your frame upright. This may take a few weeks.
