Active Time
Less than an hour
Cost

- Blanket
- Oilcloth
- Double-fold bias tape (depending on the size of your blanket, you’ll probably need 2–3 packages, or around 7 yards)
Materials
- Measuring tape
- Scissors
- Pins
- Sewing machine and thread
Tools
Measure the dimensions of your blanket and purchase enough oilcloth to cover it from edge to edge (you may need to buy multiple yards and piece them together).
Remove any edging the blanket may already have and lay it out flat with the good side down, if it has one.
Lay your oilcloth on top right side up (it should be stitched together to make one large piece if that was necessary) and line up the edges with the blanket.
If anything hangs over, blanket or oilcloth, trim so that the edges are completely even. Tip: The blanket may be slightly stretched out, so use the striped pattern on the oilcloth as your straight edge.
Place some pins in a few spots to hold the blanket and oilcloth together.
Starting at a corner, begin pinning the bias tape around the edge, sandwiching the two pieces of fabric in between (this is why you want the double-folded kind). Continue around the whole thing, adding new strips of bias tape as necessary.
Once the whole thing is pinned, topstitch it in place, staying close to the inner edge and making sure you’re stitching through the bias tape on the other side as well.
Stitch down all four edges, and you’re done.
Use your creation as a tablecloth, cozy waterproof blanket, or both!
