Hooked up: Pegboard is every hanger's helper.

Project by Allison Muir
I remember that Saturday well. It was Arbor Day, and Mom had disappeared into the garage on a search and rescue mission for decorations. She was humming some John Denver ditty, and then, suddenly, a howl of pain. She had barely jostled something when a precariously perched hammer tumbled out of nowhere and landed on her foot. Several ice packs and a few days later, Dad came home with sheets of pegboard and a sack of shiny metal doohickeys from the hardware store. My parents’ trusty storage system has since fallen into disuse. It’s time it was dug out, brought home, and returned to active duty.

- 1 4' x 8' sheet of pegboard
- 9 2" x 2" x 8' planks
- 12 1" wood screws
- 4 hinges
- Wood glue
Materials
- Table saw
- Power drill
- 80-grit sandpaper
Tools
Get your wood cuts made at the hardware store: Have the 4" x 8" sheet of pegboard cut into four 1" x 6" sections. Also, have four 14" 2 x 2s and four 74" 2 x 2s angle-cut at 45º.
Use a table saw to run a 1/2" deep, 1/8" wide channel down the center of the shorter length of each of the 2x2s.
Sand the channels until the pegboard slides in snugly.
Frame the pegboard sections with the 2 x 2s and secure at the corners with wood glue and screws. Let dry, then attach the four panels with hinges.
