Make It! Muslin-Covered Jewelry Display

Weiner used this method to hide an ugly particleboard wall left behind by an architecture firm. The contrast of the shiny metal and the dull fabric is so winning that it’s worth trying, no matter what your setup.

    Materials

  • 3x3-foot piece of unbleached muslin
  • 2x2-foot piece of Homasote board
  • 2 small screw eyes
  • 24 inches of picture-hanging wire
  • 1 nail
  • T-pins, specimen pins, and/or map pins for jewelry display
  •

    Tools

  • Staple gun
  • ⅜-inch staple-gun staples
  • Scissors
  • Hammer

1

Stretch the muslin over the Homasote board and staple on the back, starting at the center and working out toward the corners. As you pull outward, add a staple every inch or so.

2

Trim any extra fabric in back.

3

Insert the screw eyes 8 inches from the top of the back side of the board and ¹/₂ inch from the sides of the board.

4

String the wire between the screw eyes, leaving it slack, and then twist the access wire around itself.

5

Hammer a nail into the wall where you want to display the board. Hang your piece from the wire, and start adorning it with jewelry using the T-pins.
